Not just for serving tea!

Use your vintage china to serve up a delicious dessert.

How special would this look on your table on Easter Day as you celebrate with family and friends.

Vintage china just makes everything look that little bit more classy.

This design is Hazeldene, New Chelsea fine bone china.  I made a raspberry mousse and just let it set in the cup.  I think I might make individual trifles for Easter Day.  It is so good to use these beautiful vintage pieces and not just on special days!

Tea cosy time

Now that October has arrived it is time to put the tea cosy on the pot to keep the tea warm.

I looked out some cosies is warm autumn colours.  These are my favourite colours - warm orange, yellows, russet and browns.  A cup of tea and a slice of gingerbread - just what you need on a wet, chilly Scottish autumn morning!

They really do keep the tea pot warm and cosy as well as bringing a splash of colour to the kitchen.  I enjoy knitting them.

Which is your favourite?

Serving my gingerbread on this vintage china plate - Meadowland by Royal Standard.  Isn't it pretty?

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Tea at three

I love a nice cup of tea at three o'clock in the afternoon.  A bit of a tradition I suppose.

Mostly I just have a mug of tea, but occasionally I'll get out some vintage china and feel a bit posh!

I got out this gorgeous Royal Vale cup and saucer today just to show off my knitted tea cosy.  I love the way the purple and light green look together.  Matches the china.

Lets not forget the vintage linen - purple flowers and little embroidered corner - perfect.

Hope you are enjoying a cuppa this afternoon.

Once loved linen

Once upon a time someone embroidered this lovely piece of linen.  I'm sure they were very proud of it - just like I am of my stitched pieces today.  I'm now the lucky owner of this.  Just look at how vibrant the colours are after all this time.

On the underside you can see the traces of one of those blue transfer papers.  It was probably used as a tray cloth.

I love mixing and matching my vintage china with these once loved embroidery pieces.

The colours make my heart happy on these dreich, dreary winter days.

What is making your heart happy today?

Vintage Scottish teacup

I love these little vintage cups and saucers.

A present from Millport on the island of Cumbrae - not too far from my hometown of Greenock.

I found them in a charity shop a few years ago.  Love the thistles and tartan design.

It is Teacup Tuesday over on Instagram - I post as Scottish Stitcher - come on over and have a look.

Crochet and vintage - lovely!

Here's some squares from a new crochet blanket which I've just started.  Love these colours together.

Fits in with many of the vintage bits and pieces I have on my dresser as well as my Cath Kidston things.

Love these vintage cups and saucers - they are my favourite - for the moment.

This paperweight is very special to me - it was given as a gift many years ago.  I love it.

Hope you are enjoying some new crafty starts for 2022 or just basking in your love for your vintage treasures.

Vintage Robert Burns

It has been a long time since I've been rummaging in charity shops but I found this little dish recently and it just had to come home with me.  It has a cute little picture of Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) on it.  It's by Crown Devon, Fieldings, Stoke on Trent, England.  Isn't it gorgeous!

It also has a quote from one of Burns' more famous poems To A Mouse - "The best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley" (go wrong).  So true!

I've put the little dish together with a little cross stitch pillow I stitched last year and a very old book of Burns' poems which belonged to my Granny.  (Find out more about the book here.)The colours just all go together beautifully.

This little dish was certainly worth waiting for!

Don't forget that Shortbread & Ginger is on Instagram as Scottish Stitcher.

Vintage china and spring houses

At last I finished this gorgeous cross stitch design - Spring Houses by Waxing Moon Designs.

I love the colours in this.  You can stitch the houses separately as I did previously with the Christmas Houses.  I decided to stitch mine in a row and I'm really pleased with how it has turned out.  I added some flowers to the fences between the houses to give it a coherent look.

Which house would you like to live in?  I think I would like to live in the blue house with those lovely window boxes.

I looked out a lovely spring teacup and saucer - the colours just go so perfectly with this little stitch.  The cup and saucer are Hazeldean New Chelsea design and I got them in a charity shop a few years ago.  You can see more of them in my blog post here.

Now my usual big problem of how to finish this off!

Thanks, Maw Broon

Maw Broon, you are my hero!  I've never been great at making scones!  Cakes, pancakes, dumpling everything else I'm passable at, but scones have always been my downfall.  Until last week.

I decided that I would give scones another go, and picked a recipe book at random from my collection - Maw Broon's Cookbook.  Of course this Scottish stalwart had a recipe for scones - and it worked!  Yeah!

The scones look a bit rough, probably because I wasn't expecting them to be a success and didn't take much care in presentation, but they actually turned out edible!  Crumbly and delish with lashings of butter.

Chose a vintage plate (charity shop find) at random to put them on and found out that it had a Scottish connection too - made by Haviland, France for McDougall & Sons in Glasgow.

The Broons are a Scottish cartoon strip family made famous in the Sunday Post newspaper published by D C Thomson.  My Dad used to read my brother and I the cartoon, with all the different voices on Sunday evening at bed time and we used to get the Broons or Oor Wullie annual at Christmas.  I bought them for my sons too.  Love the older cartoon characters.  I've noticed recently that they have tried to update them - do not like that at all!  This is how the characters I love look.

Going to see if my luck holds and make another batch of scones next week.

Vintage gold & daffodils

I bought a pot of gorgeous little tete a tete daffodils to bring a bit of spring into the house.

I then had to have a rummage through what's left of my vintage china because I knew that I had some plates and cups that would just go beautifully with the golden daffodils.  (A lot of my stuff is still packed away in boxes after the kitchen redo.)

This Royal Vale gold and white plate is just gorgeous teamed with a delicate Balfour fine bone china cup which matches perfectly.

This is a Sutherland china cup with pretty little flowers.

My favourite is the Roslyn cup with a very blousy, over the top yellow flower - I just love it!  Need a cuppa now!

Look who I found lurking in the daffies!
