A present from Millport

Look at this fabulous charity shop find!  Two gorgeous cups and saucers in perfect condition and with the most marvellous thistles and tartan design.  They are obviously souvenir items and are marked - A Present from Millport.

Millport is a small Scottish town on the island of Cumbrae a short ferry ride from Largs, not far from Greenock.  When I was a wee girl it was a very popular place in the summer for day trips and holidays.  Still is, to a certain extent.  A popular thing to do there is to hire a bicycle and cycle round the island.

I was delighted with my find - these lovely bits and pieces are becoming rarer at affordable prices.  They are bone china and marked Thistle.

Just love the decoration - so pretty.  I love finding Scottish items!

Joining this week's Monday Social at Let's Add Sprinkles - come and have a look at some of the marvellous things there.

Magnus the Viking, Largs

I took a trip to Largs yesterday - it was a beautiful day.

This large Viking  sculpture is new and was put in place last year to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Largs which took place here in 1263 between the Scots and the Vikings.  Largs hosts a Viking Festival every year - you can read all about it here.

Made of galvanized steel by David Ogilvie Engineering of Kilmarnock, the sculpture is 16 feet (5 metres) tall.  He's called Magnus and can be found right across the street from the famous Nardini Cafe.

Chip-eating Viking!

Had a wee trip to Largs recently.  It’s as near as we get to a seaside town hereabouts!

Claim to fame - Battle of Largs (Scots v Vikings) 1263.  Hope they enjoyed their chips!

There's a sort of prom!

You can get the ferry to Millport, a wee island, hire a bike there and cycle round the island.

One of the best attractions is Nardini's CafĂ© - lovely art deco building and interior (recently modernised, but kept art deco feel).  Good ice cream.

Moorings building - architecture to resemble front (bow?)of a ship - seagulls included!

Not the best of days weatherwise, but a nice wee visit!
