It won't be long ... yeah!

Not actually talking about Christmas this time, but about the Beatles.  It won't be long was a song by them on the album (or LP as we called them) With the Beatles (1963).

I've had that song in my head all day, so decided to look out my old Beatles newspaper from about 1965 when they had toured the US for the first time.  Some great photographs in this.

Meeting Princess Margaret
The front and back pages are missing because I think there were probably posters of the band on them and of course I would have had them on my wall!!!!

Beatlemania - remember that?!  All the screaming and fainting!

Going to have to go and play some Beatles music now - just can't get that song out of my head.  If you want to hear it - click here.

Hope you've enjoyed this wee bit of nostalgia and perhaps it has brought back some great memories as it did for me.

Jackie Dating Guide 1969

What a different world it was back then!  Reading through this little booklet which came free with Jackie magazine in 1969 reminded me of the angst of those young teenage years when many hours were spend with friends discussing how to get a boyfriend.

I found this in a box of old books I had stored away at the back of a cupboard.  I suppose I kept this because it would have been the "dating bible" of its day!  My friends and I devoured each edition of Jackie magazine, plastering our bedroom walls with pictures of the latest heartthrob from Jackie.

Cathy and Claire were the agony aunts who answered all the teenage problem letters.  That page was a must read!

The little booklet is so sweet now - and actually quite sensible in many ways.  But then that's the opinion of an oldie - wonder what today's teenagers would make of it????!!!!!

Did you read the Jackie?

Vintage 60s selection box

I found something amazing when I was doing a bit of clearing out (well, re-arranging really)!  Look at this Cadbury's Selection Box from the 1960s!

Can't quite believe the prices - a Flake for threepence and a bar of chocolate for a shilling (5p)! There was a little game on the back.

BUT ... it was what was inside that I had totally forgotten about!  The contents are out of this world!

A selection of press cuttings from 1968 and 1969 all about the moon landings.

I must have been quite a collector - even in those days.  I had totally forgotten about these.

Haven't a clue what I'm going to do with them.  Have to admit that I found the other sides which had news from the time and especially the adverts more interesting this time around!

Funny what turns up - have you found anything interesting recently?  Share them with a link in the comments section and I'll highlight a few over the next few days.

Beatles Quiz Book

I was showing my Beatles Quiz Book to a friend recently and we were trying to answer some of the questions ... we didn't do very well I have to admit!  I'm not even sure we even knew this trivia at the time (well, I was just a baby, ahem)!

The book was published by William Collins Sons & Company Ltd in 1964.

The drawings are great.

I've photographed a page of questions and answers, so if you were a Beatles fan you can give it a go (click on pic to see it more easily)!  Good luck!

You can see some more pictures from the book in a previous blog post here.

Vintage Vogue

These pictures are FAB!

They are from a vintage Vogue Knitting Pattern booklet dated September 1967.

Some of the patterns are a bit ... well different.  This particular outfit is called the "Bell-Boy Suit"!

Some of the pictures are so amazing!  Love the wool symbol ring.

But for me, this just shouts 60s!  Love it!

Did Your Mum Make You Wear A Liberty Bodice?

Did any of you wear a liberty bodice when you were little?  I saw this little cabinet at Quarriers Village - advertising liberty bodices from "Libertyland" Market Harborough.  It brought back a few memories.

A liberty bodice was like a vest but made out of a soft, warm fabric.  My mum made me wear one during the winter when I was very young.  I suppose in the days before central heating we needed all the warmth we could get.

When I think about it - this was my winter school gear when I was about 5 years old - pants and woolly tights, vest, liberty bodice, full length petticoat, school blouse and skirt then a cardigan!  If I was going outside, then this ensemble was topped off with a school blazer and trench-coat!  How on earth was I able to move????  Getting ready for PE (gym) must have been awful - although when  I think about it we didn't have PE kit in primary school, we just pranced about in our uniform.  No wonder!  Teachers would have had to spend an entire morning  waiting for the little girls to divest themselves of all their layers!

Unrestricted breathing??  Unless your friend is trying to suffocate you with a pillow!

Discovered that liberty bodices (sometimes called "emancipation bodices") were introduced when flapper gals abandoned their corsets and freed themselves from the tyranny of restricting clothing.  Although given what I had to wear when I was little, I'm not sure my Mum got the message!

Twinsets and Ponytails

Had a look through my pattern stash to see just how many vintage Greenock knitting patterns I had - most of them belonged to my Mum.

She was a great knitter - she took her knitting everywhere she went, even on holiday she would sit on the beach and knit!  This well worn pattern was one of her favourites.

Twinsets  - remember them?  I remember having this twinset in blue ... and gray for school ... and green to wear with my kilt!

I also had the hat on the right - what you can't see is that there was a gap at the back and that was for your ponytail   to go through!  I had one of these in blue ... and gray ..... you get the picture!

Checked out what the record/45/single was - "Am I Blue" by Billy Fury which was released in 1963.  Lovely detail in cardi - another twinset.  I had this in ... !

Have a great weekend.

Ads from the 60s

I've had an old Beatles newspaper since the 60s.  The front cover has gone - must have been a poster on it which I probably had on my bedroom wall the rest of it is just full of photograpghs and information about the Beatles.  Thought you might like to see this picture - very early photograph with Pete Best.

The ads are great.

Ice skating at Silver Blades, Prescot Road, Liverpool.  Look at the prices for musical instruments!

Gordon-Moore's toothpaste - funny little poem.

Fab record players.

Some names from the past.

More pictures of the Beatles another day ........ promise!

The Beatles

Were you a Beatles fan?

Paul, George, John, Ringo

According to the news, on this day, 50 years ago, the Beatles has their first gig at the Cavern Club in Liverpool!  (Surely it can't be that long ago!)

Liverpool

On this day in 1964 the Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in America.

Beatles For Sale

Forgot that LPs had two sides!

This is the first LP I ever owned - Beatles For Sale!  I got it for my Christmas (1964).  It was in mono and cost 32/- (32 shillings or £1 and 12 shillings)!  I think my parents must have got this as a gift for themselves, as I was only a tiny baby in 1964 (ahem …)!

Favourite Beatles song?  Hmm … that's really difficult as there so many greats!  Loved - Revolution (1968 I think).

What's your favourite?
