Beautiful Stained Glass

A bit of research has shown that the stained glass windows in Westburn Church, Greenock were designed by the famous stained glass artist Douglas Strachan.
I've written about them before, but now I know the stories behind them.

This window, depicting Deborah and Barak is in memory to those belonging to the church who fell in the Great War.

One of the other windows shows a nativity scene.

This window depicts Miriam leading the Israelite women across the Red Sea.

Next weekend Greenock (amongst other places) hosts Doors Open Day, when a variety of local places of interest, some of which wouldn't normally be open to the public, let folks look around.  It is a fascinating scheme and more information can be obtained here.  Other parts of Scotland may be taking part on different weekends.  Its a great opportunity to get out and explore the history of an area.

Love, Liz

Apropos of nothing really, but on my blogs to be read list, yours came after Mark's 'Views from the bike shed' blog, where he has photos of the supposedly most remote little chapel in Wales. The contrast between the two leading photos was quite striking.
There is a stained glass museum in Ely, I keep meaning to make the journey there to see it, but never seem to get around to it. I love stained glass, and we have a small modern one on the landing, but I am keep a look out for an old piece that's affordable!

I love stained glass, and looking around old churches. The Open Doors scheme is such a brilliant opportunity to see hidden treasures! Enjoy!

I wish we had a doors open day here - it's such a lovely idea and exciting that places open their doors and allow people a peek inside! The window depicting the fallen is so touching

Thanks for popping into Flutterby Patch Liz. Reading your blog I think we share many things from the same childhood era (even down to the Beatles!) Greenock looks lovely and the doors open day sounds a great idea which if you are 'nosy' like me you'll thoroughly enjoy. Have fun!
